Reno, NV – Over the last two years, the Reno Police Department (RPD) has responded to over 700 calls for service from concerned citizens related to illegal street racing. These illegal races have been the cause of numerous citizen complaints as well as several deaths from vehicle crashes. RPD has conducted numerous operations to catch and stop street racing; however Reno Police still continue to get reports of illegal street racing throughout our city.
Over the next several months, Reno Police Officers will be actively targeting illegal street races throughout Reno where we have received the majority of reports as well as monitoring social media. Anyone who is a participant could be arrested and charged with a felony if they elude officers or cause a crash that result in a death or serious injury. Organizers and spectators of these races can also be charged and fined up to $1,000.
The Reno Police Department is working closely with the Reno City Attorney’s Office and the Washoe County District Attorney to implement additional penalties for those caught for illegal street racing. If approved, one of the additional penalties could be the seizure, forfeiture and destruction of the vehicle used during the illegal race. Similar to the process used by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
“Non sanctioned street racing is not only against the law in the City of Reno, but it is extremely dangerous. These individuals are not only risking their lives, but the lives of innocent drivers and pedestrians in our community” – Reno Police Chief Jason Soto
Do to the risk illegal street racing presents to our community, Chief Soto has authorized overtime for Officers working these assignments in an effort to locate and enforce illegal street racing.
Citizens who see illegal street racing occurring are encouraged to contact Reno Direct at (775) 334-INFO (4636) to report it to the Reno Police Department.
Fighting crime and stopping illegal street racing is not a job Reno Police can do on our own – It takes all of us working together to make Reno a safe community, with safe roads.

This Joining Forces campaign began on June 10 and will go through June 28, 2017 as law enforcement agencies work together in an effort to save lives and slow drivers down.
Speeding is a contributing factor in approximately one-third of fatal crashes on the nation’s roadways. Exceeding the speed limit is considered aggressive driving just as weaving in and out of traffic, passing in emergency lanes or along the shoulder and failing to yield to other motorists.
Most motorists do not believe speeding is as risky as other behaviors, but according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the consequences of driving too fast include:
