Reno Police working with our Community to crackdown on Illegal Street Racing

9/28/2016

Since September of 2014, the Reno Police Department has responded to approximately 700 calls for service from concerned citizens related to illegal street racing.  These illegal races have been the cause of numerous citizen complaints, and several deaths from vehicle crashes.   After a recent operation in August, which resulted in 16 spectators of an illegal motorcycle race being cited, Reno Police still continue to get reports of illegal street racing throughout our city.

Over the next several weeks, Reno Police Officers will be looking for illegal street races in North and South Reno where we have received the majority of illegal racing reports.   Anyone who is a participant or spectator during these races could be arrested and fined up to $1,000.  Since September 2014 Reno Police have issued over 151 citations related to illegal street racing.

Citizens who see illegal street racing occurring are encouraged to contact Reno Direct at (775) 334-INFO (4636) to report it to the Reno Police Department.

Fighting crime and stopping illegal street racing is not a job Reno Police can do on our own – It takes all of us working together to make Reno a safe community.

Reno Police preparing for large crowds for this years Street Vibrations

9/20/2016

Wednesday September 21, 2016 starts the Street Vibrations Fall Rally.  The Reno Police Department is expecting large crowds and lots of motorcycles in our area during this five day event.  In preparation for this year’s rally, Reno Police will again provide event security by dedicating Officers to several venues throughout the city.  We also will install safety bollards throughout the Downtown Reno venue which will prevent unwanted vehicular traffic in the interior of the event for the safety of spectators and participants.

As with any big event in our city, Reno Police want to remind event participants and citizens traveling in the Downtown area of some basic safety tips and laws.

  • Motorcycle riders need to have a motorcycle endorsement on their state issued drivers license to legally drive on public roads in Nevada
  • Anyone riding a motorcycle on public roads is required to wear a DOT approved helmet and protective eyewear if their motorcycle is not equipped with a windscreen
  • Motorcycle riders from California and other states need to remember that splitting travel lanes is illegal in the State of Nevada
  • Illegal street racing outside of sanctioned venue events will be strictly enforced
  • Drivers of motor vehicles need to double check their mirrors for motorcyclists as they can quickly appear out of nowhere
  • Ensure you park your motorcycle in a well lit and secure area
  • Don’t drink and drive

There will also be street closures that could affect commuters and those traveling in certain areas of Reno.   The affected streets will be:

  • Virginia Street north of 1st Street to 6th Street (Wednesday through Sunday)
  • Morrill Avenue south of East 4th Street (Wednesday through Sunday)
  • Spokane Street south of East 4th Street (Wednesday through Sunday)
  • Yale Way from Market Street to Harvard Way (Wednesday through Sunday)
  • Wonder Street from Wells Avenue to Wheeler Avenue (Saturday only)
