Reno Police Remind Residents that the Use of Any Handheld Electronic Device While Driving is illegal in Nevada

1/25/2017

Between now and January 30th, Reno Police will be Joining Forces with other Nevada law enforcement agencies throughout the state and citing distracted drivers. Nevada law states that any use of a handheld electronic device—cell phone, mp3 player, GPS device, etc.—while driving is illegal and offenders will be pulled over and cited.

Nevada’s ban on handheld devices while driving went into effect Jan. 1, 2012, and still, law enforcement continues to spot and cite offenders every day.

Research has found that using a cell phone behind the wheel makes a driver four times more likely to get into a serious crash. Additionally, when sending or receiving text messaging behind the wheel, a driver’s eyes are off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, equivalent to driving the length of a football field at 65 miles per hours.

Reno Police want to remind motorists this increased enforcement isn’t just limited to cell phone use behind the wheel. Surfing the Internet, using a GPS or changing the song on your mp3 player are all common, illegal distractions taking motorists’ eyes off the road and causing crashes throughout our state.

For more information on Joining Forces and other statewide traffic safety programs, please visit http://www.zerofatalitiesnv.com. Follow Zero Fatalities Nevada on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and @ZeroFatalitiesNV.

Reno Police want to hear from our Community

1/4/2017

The men and women of the Reno Police Department want to hear from you on how well we are doing with our service to you and our community.   We have created a community survey to solicit feedback from residents about crime, quality of life issues and opinions about the department's effectiveness. Reno Police Chief Jason Soto sees the survey “as a quality assurance tool to measure how the police department is meeting the public safety needs of our residents.”

The survey will be available from January 4th, 2017 until February 6th, 2017 for our community to let us know how we are doing and what we can do to better serve you.  The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete, and is available on several platforms.   These platforms include the Reno Police Department Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram, as well as the myRPD app, renopd.com, or going directly to myrpd.us/survey2017. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.

The men and women of the Reno Police Department are committed to being a model of policing excellence, and being completely integrated into our community.  Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for more information on the Reno Police Department.
