Reno Police Remind Citizens of Winter Weather Safety

12/5/2017

Reno, NV As cold winter weather settles into Northern Nevada, the Reno Police Department would like to remind our community of some common safety tips when preparing to travel in our area.  Whether you are commuting to work, or a family member’s house to celebrate the holidays, the weather in our area can change quickly.   Sudden wind, rain and snowstorms create especially hazardous conditions. The most important thing to do when driving in bad weather is slow down, and to follow these safety tips:

• Never leave your vehicle unattended when warming it up.  If citizens need to warm their cars up they should consider investing in a security kill switch or auto start system for their vehicles.

• Make sure your vehicle is properly serviced.  Check your battery, antifreeze, wipers, windshield washer fluid, ignition system, lights, and your vehicles heater.

• Remove all ice and snow from your windshield and windows before you leave your residence.

• Get the feel of the roadway; start out very slowly, then gently test your brakes to find out how well you can stop. Start slowing down long before you come to an intersection or turn.

• Keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you.

• Reduce speed. There is no such thing as a completely safe speed on snow and ice. Each city block or stretch of highway may be different, depending upon sun, shade, amount of sanding and other conditions.

 • Allow yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination.

We would also like to remind our citizens that studded snow tires may only be used from October 1 through April 30. Tires with retractable studs are allowed any time of year, but the studs may be extended or engaged only during the dates indicated.

For more information on safe winter driving tips go to the Nevada Department of Transportation website at https://www.nevadadot.com/safety/safe-winter-driving.
