Reno Police Remind Parents and Students of Internet Safety

5/30/2017

Reno, NV –   With the ever growing world of social media being available on computers, smart phones and now smart watches, the Reno Police Department wants to remind the community of some basic internet safety considerations.

  • Do not respond to random, rude or harassing texts/IM/Posts.  If you receive such a communication, report it to a parent, trusted adult, and/or law enforcement.
  • Review and make sure you and your child are using appropriate privacy settings. Also review application and software terms of service – they may be collecting/sharing information you don’t want collected or shared.
  • Never meet with anyone you have met online.
  • Be cautious when in forums, chat-groups, application global chats, or when engaging any other communications. It is common for online predators and criminals to create and use profiles and information that is false in order to target specific groups and individuals.
  • Online predators often use specific language and questions to prey on unsuspecting or vulnerable potential victims. They will gain your trust, make promises and then ask for photos, videos or information about you. Once you have provided compromising information or photos, they may use that information to coerce you into illegal behavior or extortion.
  • Never post or give out your personal information: phone number, address, date of birth, school, vacations, favorite hangouts, etc.
  • Make yourself aware of what applications (Apps) are collecting and allowing. Open format messaging, private messaging and sharing of personal information are a few items to look for. Several popular social media-type Apps do not contain restrictions or filters for content and language.
  • Use safe-search setting on any device your child may have access to. Apply filters to devices, applications and software programs in order to ensure children are not exposed to harmful material.
  • BULLYING: Don’t respond, don’t retaliate and save the evidence.   Report it immediately whether you are a victim or a witness.

Reno Police Continue To See Trends in Older Vehicle Thefts

5/29/2017

Reno, NV – Over the last several months the Reno Police Department has noticed a trend in the thefts of older motor vehicles in our area.   Some of the most reported stolen vehicles continue to be 90’s model Honda passenger cars, and older SUV’s and pickup trucks.

After years of false car alarms, people have stopped paying attention to alarms. Any serious anti-theft device must do more than just make noise. If you want an audio alarm; use it in conjunction with other forms of prevention.

The longer it takes to steal a car, the more attention a thief will attract. Look for devices that are: highly visible, hard to defeat, and will prevent the car from starting or will kill the engine shortly after it is stolen. To prevent "hot-wiring," protect the steering column.

  • A kill switch is a simple toggle device that shuts off the engine's ignition system.
  • Steering wheel locks are visible from outside the car and prevent the steering wheel from being turned more than a few degrees.
  • Collars are devices that prevent the steering column from being stripped.
  • Brake locks prevent the brake from being engaged and therefore the transmission cannot be removed from the park position.
  • Wheel locks prevent the vehicle from being moved in any direction.
  • Etching vehicle parts with your VIN number can also be a deterrent. Professional thieves shy away from vehicles that have had the vehicle identification number (VIN) etched into the doors, windows, windshield, engine block, and other parts.

Reno Police also recommend owners of older vehicles replace their ignition switch as they do wear out.   It is also recommended they be replaced if you purchased an older vehicle from a private party because you do not know if other keys that may start your car have been made.

The goal in preventing auto theft is to establish multiple layers of protection for your vehicle. Thieves are looking for the least path of resistance. Although no method is foolproof, consider where you park, theft prevention devices, and etching. However, spending money on anti-theft devices does not help if drivers don't follow the basic precaution of locking their cars, taking the key, and activating the anti-theft device.

If you have any information on any suspects that may be involved with the recent vehicle thefts, please contact the Reno Police Department at (775) 334-2140, or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900, www.secretwitness.com, or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword – SW.
