WHEN: Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 12 p.m. (noon)
WHERE: Reno Police Station - 455 E 2nd St, Reno, NV 89501
WHO: Reno Police Chief Jason Soto and Reno City Councilmember Neoma Jardon
Reno, Nevada (August 16, 2016) — The Reno Police Department is currently investigating several major crashes that have occurred in our area over the last 10 days. In each of the cases, alcohol or drugs are suspected as being a contributing factor.
In an effort to better protect our community, Reno Police Chief Jason Soto will be putting more police officers on the street to be on the lookout for those driving under the influence. The additional officers assigned to work the DUI enforcement in our area will be actively stopping any suspected DUI drivers. If you drive under the influence, you will be stopped, and you will go to jail.
The Reno Police Department wants to remind our community that “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.” When you drive drunk, you run the risk of killing yourself or someone else. Violators will be looking at jail time, the loss or suspension of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, plus other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car or motorcycle towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off from work. The average DUI arrest costs defendants approximately $10,000.
Chief Soto and Reno City Councilmember Neoma Jardon will be available for media interviews at 12 p.m. (noon) on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Reno Police Station downtown to discuss stepping up patrols, and the impact of impaired driving on the community.
8/15/2016
Over the last several weeks, the Reno Police Department has noticed a trend in the thefts of older motor vehicles in our area. Some of the most reported stolen vehicles are 90’s model Honda and Jeep vehicles.
After years of false car alarms, people have stopped paying attention to alarms. Any serious anti-theft device must do more than just make noise. If you want an audio alarm; use it in conjunction with other forms of prevention.
The longer it takes to steal a car, the more attention a thief will attract. Look for devices that are: highly visible, hard to defeat, and will prevent the car from starting or will kill the engine shortly after it is stolen. To prevent "hot-wiring," protect the steering column.
The goal in preventing auto theft is to establish multiple layers of protection for your vehicle. Thieves are looking for the least path of resistance. Although no method is foolproof, consider where you park, theft prevention devices, and etching. However, spending money on anti-theft devices does not help if drivers don't follow the basic precaution of locking their cars, taking the key, and activating the anti-theft device.
For more information on crime prevention tips, helpful safety tips, or to find your what your Reno Police Department is doing go to renopd.com, or like the on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

The Reno Police Department also teamed up with the City of Reno Community Services and Safety Team (CSAST) and conducted spot inspections on 28 businesses with no violations or citations were issued.
This year the City of Reno again partnered with Hot August Nights and the local community to continue the string of successful Hot August Night events. The Reno Police increased event security by dedicating staffing to the events throughout the City. We also employed bollards throughout the Downtown Reno venue which inhibited unwanted vehicular traffic in the interior of the event.
This year the majority of the venues noticed an increase in attendance. The crowds were extremely positive about the increased safety practices within the event and very thankful for the police presence throughout the venues. The Reno Police Department would like to reciprocate those positive thoughts and words and thank the community and visitors alike for their continued support and words of encouragement.
The City of Reno strives to enhance the community’s quality of life by promoting a sustainable and vibrant economy. Supporting regional and local special events is just one example. For more information, visit Reno.gov/Events.
