Reno, NV – With local schools and universities returning back to school, the Reno Police Department and the University of Nevada Reno Police have seen an increase in bicycle thefts. Unfortunately when most bicycles get stolen and recovered, the owners of the stolen bikes never get them back due to not knowing who owns the bike.
Both agencies provide free and quick services for citizens who live in the City of Reno or who attend the University and live on campus to record their bicycles serial number and register them. Citizens of Reno can complete the online bike registration form at renopd.com, or come to the front desk Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm. Citizens do not need to bring their bike to the Reno Police Station to register them.
Whether you complete the form online or come to the main police station, citizens can expect the whole process to take less than 10 minutes. Once registered, Reno PD will provide you with a metal backed sticker to place on your bike in the unfortunate event it gets stolen. This will quickly allow our Officers to check the bicycles registration and contact the owner.
The University has a similar program through their Parking Services Department. Students who have bicycles and live on campus can go to www.unr.edu/bicycle/campus-info/theft for more information on registering your bicycle on campus.
Reno PD and University Police Services want to remind bicycle owners that in order to prevent bicycle theft, be sure to use bike racks to lock your bike when they are available. Secure your bike using a sturdy lock, U-bolt type locks are typically the best. Finally, always lock the frame and the wheel, and when riding at night, secure your bike in a well lit area.
