“The final statistics from the City of Reno have been collected regarding this year’s Santa Crawl,” Special Events Program Manager Alexis Hill says. “We want to thank the businesses and participants that helped make this year’s Santa Crawl a safe and fun event.”
The Santa Crawl invites tourists and residents to come to downtown Reno dressed as Santa (or his helpers) to enjoy the services and products of established businesses. The Reno Police Department estimated about 15,000 event participants this year.
City of Reno's Community Service and Safety Team (CSAST)statistics:
The CSAST includes representatives of the City of Reno Code Enforcement, Fire Department, Police Department, and Business License Division. CSAST stats:
Of note, members of CSAST visited 50 bars, restaurants, liquor stores and businesses in the downtown core the week prior to the event to review best practices and provide detailed information regarding expectations for public safety during the event itself.

Cold winter weather has settled into Northern Nevada, and families will soon be planning road trips to see loved ones for the holidays. With the cold weather, citizens are also leaving their vehicles unattended while they warm up outside of their homes. Reno Police want to give the members of our community some safety tips for traveling in winter storms and warming up your vehicle on cold mornings.
Preparing your vehicle for the winter season and knowing how to react if you break down or get stuck in a winter storm are key to safe winter driving. Drivers should have the following items checked by a mechanic prior to driving their vehicle in the winter:
Battery, antifreeze, wipers and windshield washer fluid, ignition system, lights and your vehicles heater. Also make sure your tires have plenty of tread and are properly inflated as well as proper sized snow chains.
Reno Police also recommend that before leaving your home on a road trip, families need to make sure they pack a sleeping bag or blankets, flashlight, first aid kit, necessary medications, matches, small shovel, extra food, charging cable for their cell phone and water. Also letting your loved ones know the route you plan on traveling in case you do get stuck in a storm to assist any search and rescue efforts.
Finally, this time of year the Reno Police Department sees an increase in vehicle thefts due to citizens leaving their idling vehicles warming up in their driveway or on the street. Reno Police highly discourage leaving your vehicle running unoccupied with the keys in it whether at home or to run quickly into a convenience store. If citizens need to warm their cars up they should consider investing in a security kill switch or auto start system for their vehicles.
